Romain Grosjean has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the Mexican Grand Prix next week following his collision with Charles Leclerc on lap one in Austin. The pair made contact on the run down into Turn 12 at the end of the main straight at the Circuit of the Americas.

Grosjean retired from the race after the collision, while Leclerc pitted and rejoined the circuit. However, the Monegasque driver retired later on in the Grand Prix, with Sauber making the call and instructing the Ferrari-bound driver to return to the pits.

“Video evidences showed that entering Turn 12 Car 8 [Grosjean] locked tyres and made contact with Car 16 [Leclerc],” an FIA statement read “As a result of the incident both cars suffered damage and Car 8 had to retire. The stewards noted that Car 8 lifted and braked early because of the positions of the cars in front, but nevertheless Car 8 made contact with Car 16.”

Grosjean has also been handed a penalty point on his licence "in recognition of the circumstances". He now sits on 10 points over a 12 month period, but will have one penalty point removed in Mexico.

Magnussen under investigation for fuel flow rule breach

The day could get worse for Haas as its second driver Kevin Magnussen is under investigation after it is believed his car exceeded the permitted fuel limit for the race. Magnussen finished the race in ninth place, but is likely to be excluded due to the incident.

"Car 20, driver Kevin Magnussen, consumed more than 105kg of fuel, from the time at which the signal to start the race was given to the time the car had crossed the Line after the end-of-race signal had been given," read notes from the FIA's Jo Bauer "As this is not in compliance with Article 30.5 of the 2018 Formula One Sporting regulations, I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration."
