Marcus Ericsson has had a new gearbox and energy store fitted to his Sauber following his crash during qualifying on Saturday. The Swede ran wide going through the Dunlop curve on a hot lap during the first stage of qualifying.

His car was sent through the grass and gravel trap before making contact with the barrier, destroying his C37. The former Caterham driver will start the race from the back of the grid and has opted to have a have a couple of new parts fitted to the car.

"It’s super disappointing,” admitted Ericsson after the session. “The short runs were good but the long runs were even better, the car felt great on the long run and I was really really strong. It’s very, very frustrating not to get a decent place to show that.

“I will still try and do the best race I can but around here I think we’ll see very few overtakes. We’ll try and do something with strategy but when it’s one stop it’s difficult as well. So we’ll see.”

Ericsson has scored points on three occasions this year, with his last top ten finish coming at Singapore. The 28-year-old will be taking on a reserve driver role at Sauber at the end of the year, as the team has decided to run with Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi for 2019.
