The McLaren Formula 1 team is interested in signing Daniel Ricciardo for the next season and offers over 20 million dollars. The Australian driver has said previously that he is trying to find new options for his career in Formula 1 and he was thinking his exit from Red Bull Racing.

His contract with Red Bull expires at the end of 2018 and he is already analysing his options for 2019. It is uncertain if Fernando Alonso will retire or remain in the Formula 1 Championship for the next year. This is something that brings McLaren in a difficult position as it must think very carefully the line-up of drivers from now.

The advisor of Red Bull Helmut Marko spoke about Ricciardo on Sport Bild after Monaco Grand Prix: "Our Daniel Ricciardo is the king of the market. McLaren offers him more every week, but above all some people in Mercedes would absolutely want to join them in the team. We want to keep him and Daniel knows it. Why should he go to Mercedes or Ferrari? To be a No. 2 driver? With us, Daniel has equal opportunities with the same equipment and no team orders. I think he knows that too."

It is worth noting that if Ricciardo signs with McLaren, then his contract will make him one of the highest-paid drivers in Formula 1.

Might as well try and lure Hamilton and Vettel, while they're at it.

  • 20 mil makes him one of the highest paid? Let me get this straight, RIC is not joining a inferiorr team to RB. Not happening, never, ever.

  • I love McLaren but Daniel DON'T DO IT!!. it's hard enough watching Alonso trundling around in midfield, not you too.

I think he's just being polite, and not closing any doors. McLaren may become an option in 2021 when the rules change.

  • I hope it doesn't happen. Not yet. I love McLaren but getting young top driver while the team is down will just breed more tension. However, 20M and being the undisputed #1 driver would be appealing. Especially if he can be convinced that McLaren can be a top team. I don't think anyone is convinced at this point.

    • 1 year at McLaren if Alonso stays could be good in one way and one alone: we get to see him against an old veteran. If he beats Alonso during 2019, he should be a shoe in for any team. He already is, but that would put out any doubts. In every other way it'd be a bad move for Ric IMO.

    • That would probably be the best pairing in F1, but a very expensive one. It should really be a no-brainer for Ferrari to snatch Ricciardo, but alas it's Ferrari. They don't like Ricciardo's awesome personality because it's, I suppose, too spontaneous, lacking in arrogance. Ferrari don't want to drivers that can fight each other , or drivers that wouldn't accept #2 status.

    • Yeah I find Ferrari's reasoning very lacking. IMO Ric is probably the most marketable driver on the grid, aside from maybe Hammy. I really dislike how Merc and Ferrari let their divas get such a big say on what team mates they'll have.

I'd like to see Vet & Alo at Ferrari, and Ham & Ric at Mercedes. Alas it will probably be Vet & Lec at Ferrari and Ham & Bot at Mercedes. Ricciardo will stay at Red Bull, can't see any reason for him to go to McLaren. Renault would me more likely than McLaren.
