Hulkenberg not afraid of partnering Alonso in 2018

Nico Hulkenberg would not mind being joined at Renault by Fernando Alonso in 2018. Alonso's current contract with McLaren expires at the end of the year and it is still not known if he'll opt out of the frustrating McLaren situation, stick with the team or join another Formula 1 competitor.

Renault has been one of the teams Alonso has been linked with, having driven for the outfit in two stints. First, he joined in 2003 and competed for the Fench squad for four seasons, before rejoining in 2008 after an ironically unhappy year at McLaren.

A number of other drivers have been linked to the seat, but Nico Hulkenberg, who will remain with Renault next year, says that he does not mind who his teammate is next year:  "I don't really care about the driver rumours about next season, because I don't see that it directly affects me," he said.

"My future at Renault is long-term," the German wrote in his latest Sport1 column. "It is fun to work on the development of the team. Of course I have noticed that Alonso and Kubica are mentioned as possible new drivers for our team. For Robert, a comeback would definitely be good for him and the whole sport.

"And Fernando would of course be a real heavyweight for our team and I don't mind that at all. On the contrary, he would be a good measure for me and a great challenge. I do not think I would need to hide behind him," Hulkenberg insisted.
