Sebastian Vettel has secured pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after setting a lap time of 1:16.276. The German dominated the final session and ended up just under two-tenths of a second ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

"The front row for us is incredible and we're looking forward to tomorrow," he said. "We are working hard. the last race wasn't great for us. We are here and we try to do our best. We're happy where we are as a team and remember where we were 12 months ago. The main task comes tomorrow so nothing is won today but we're very happy."

Raikkonen went P2 to secure an all Ferrari front row, the first since Monaco of this year. The Finn's fastest lap of 1:16.444 was good enough to get ahead of both Mercedes, who will start the race from third and fourth respectively.

Valtteri Bottas once again got the better of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Bottas' lap time was a tenth and a half up on Hamilton's with the Brit struggling with vibrations all through the session. Bottas admitted that Ferrari simply had the better car around the tight and twisty Hungaroring circuit.

"Ferrari has been quick all weekend. We knew qualifying would be close and they'd be tough to beat and they had the upper hand today. They'be clearly got everything right for this track and we've still got work to do for tracks like this. But let's see tomorrow."

The team two-by-two's continued onto the third row, where Red Bull occupy. The energy drink team will no doubt be disappointed at not being able to take a pole position challenge to Mercedes and Ferrari after showing promising pace on Friday. Max Verstappen will start fifth, with Australian Daniel Ricciardo alongside him in sixth

Nico Hulkenberg once again demonstrated the pace of the upgraded Renault, with the new floor getting its second outing in Budapest. Hulkenberg qualified in seventh but will drop down the order for tomorrow's race due to a five place grid penalty.

Fernando Alonso will inherit Hulkenberg's seventh place as he qualified in eighth, going faster than teammate Stoffel Vandoorne who ended up ninth. The McLaren looked rapid around the non-power dependent track and will be looking for a double points finish in tomorrow's race. Rounding out the top ten was Carlos Sainz.

Q1

Valtteri Bottas was the first driver to emerge from his pit box and head onto the track, closely followed by teammate Hamilton. There was then a roar from the crowd as Paul di Resta pulled out of the Williams garage and take to the track for the first time in four years, replacing Felipe Massa who has fallen ill.

Hamilton initially went into first place but was beaten by Vettel. Vettel was then displaced by teammate Raikkonen, while the other Finn of Bottas slotted into P4. Vettel quickly cooled himself and went again, shooting himself to the top of the standings with a lap time of 1:17.2.

Di Resta laid down seven laps in order to learn the car and was sitting at the bottom of the standings. The McLaren's jumped into the top 10, with Vandoorne going ahead of Alonso before the Spaniard's second lap got him in front of his teammate.

Max Verstappen fired his Red Bull up into second place, just marginally down on pacesetter Vettel. The timing screens began to fill with the colour green as the drivers set personal best sectors, with a lot of improvements being laid down. Kvyat then spun violently in sector 2, ruining the fast lap of Sergio Perez.

However, the Mexican didn't have to worry as he remained safe. Paul di Resta set his final lap to drag himslef out of last place and will start from a respectable ninteenth place. His teammate Stroll also couldn't get out of the session.

Q2

Going into Q2 Ferrari seemed to be the car to beat, after Vettel had been quickest in Q1 and FP3, with Raikkonen not far behind. There was optimism from Palmer and both McLarens who all expected to make a rare appearance in Q3 for all of them, with a boost in their usual respective performances expected.

After the opening runs it looked like it was Vettel who still had the pace, becoming the first man all weekend to go into the 1:16s on his first run, which was more than enough to see him not have to come out again in the session, with Raikkonen also staying in the garage after his first lap. Verstappen also impressed on his first run, putting his car second, with Hamilton only third.

After the first run, the optimism from the McLarens was justified, as they had both cars in the top ten, with the Force Indias with cause for concern, looking like perhaps missing out on the Q3, which has been a usual fixture for both cars this season.

On the second run though, Hamilton set an extremely impressive lap time, going much quicker than he has all weekend, and two-tenths quicker than title rival Sebastian Vettel.

The real battle behind was going on between the McLaren’s, Toro Rosso’s Force India’s and Jolyon Palmer’s Renault with Hulkenberg again showing great pace to be fairly safe into Q3. in the end it was the McLarens who had a great session, getting both cars into Q3 in a rare occurrence this season, at a track where they were expected to go well.

It was a disappointing session for Force India with Ocon and Perez 12th and 14th respectively, and also another disappoint session for Jolyon Palmer, with him missing out on Q3 but was a whole eight-tenths behind his teammate.

Q3

Valtteri Bottas was the first once again to emerge from the pits, followed by rival Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton's car was being checked for damage after the Brit rode the kerbs harshly in the second qualifying session. The car was deemed fine and he headed out onto the track.

Bottas was the first to set a time, a 1:16.8, but that was smashed by Vettel who went quickest on a 1:16.2. On his fast lap, Hamilton backed off after a big mistake at Turn 4, running off the track. Raikkonen set a time that launched him into third, before being displaced by Daniel Ricciardo.

While everyone waited in the pits, Verstappen emerged on to the track to set a lap and went into P3. He returned to the pits and everyone prepared for the final runs. Bottas didn't improve, while Hamilton climbed into P3 behind his teammate.

Raikkonen was on a flyer and was the last of the frontrunners to set a time. While Vettel failed to improve on his first attempt, Raikkonen went second and secured Ferrari's third front row lockout of the season. With the team having not claimed a win since Monaco, there will be a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Vettel and Raikkonen to deliver the goods tomorrow.

  • Hamilton is not in a good position, not when he is right in front of two very hung(a)ry Red Bulls.
