Pirelli chief Paul Hembery is confident that Mercedes has sorted its tyre issues that it has been suffering from since the start of the season. Mercedes has been having trouble getting the tyres into the correct operating window compared to rivals Ferrari.
This has caused some qualifying upsets, including Lewis Hamilton in Monaco. Ferrari did extensive testing on the 2017 Pirelli tyres, which has been indicated as one of the main reason why they were able to one up Mercedes in that area.
Mercedes pushed hard to get the issues sorted, and Hembery believes it has worked: "The hard work paid off," the Briton told Germany's Auto Bild. "What they did between Monaco and Canada was impressive -- a dramatic step.
"We would have liked more top drivers as committed to work as Sebastian was. He gave us important feedback from morning to night, pushing us in the direction the drivers wanted, and we have to thank him because it makes a difference whether an inexperienced driver or one of the best tests tyres. If there was an advantage, it was at the very first winter test this year."
