Toro Rosso has cried out to Renault, urging them to bring an engine upgrade sooner rather than later. While Renault has been making strides since their 2014 struggles, in 2017 they are well off the power of Mercedes and Ferrari.
Renault supply engines to Red Bull (although they're branded as TAG Heuer) and Toro Rosso, and it is these engines that are suspected to be part of the pace disadvantage both teams have, particularly Red Bull. However, in Monaco, the least power sensitive track on the calendar, both teams look relatively competitive.
"I want more progress," said Russian driver Daniil Kvyat. "I want to say that at its core it is a good engine, but hopefully now Renault will focus on improving the efficiency because we really need it."
Carlos Sainz also said that the team is seeking the upgrades, but knows that when and where they come is not in Toro Rosso's control: "They say it might be Baku or Austria, but I don't know when. It's definitely out of our control, so I try not to think about it," said the Spaniard.
