Carlos Sainz has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the next Grand Prix in Russia following an investigation into the crash with Lance Stroll. Sainz and Stroll made contact on lap 14 of the Grand Prix, as Sainz was emerging from the pits.

Stroll passed the Spaniard on the start-finish straight as Sainz was coming out of the pits. As they both got to turn one, Stroll turned to take the apex while Sainz attempted to overtake down the inside.

Contact was made which resulted in both drivers retiring from the race. Sainz fully believes that he was not at fault for the incident, claiming that 18-year-old Stroll turned into him.

"I had seen that Stroll was coming. He was on the outside but suddenly turned inwards. I guess he did not see me, otherwise, I would have been given the room. Then we had contact together to get the bend," said Sainz in a brief comment to Ziggo Sport.

Agreed, but that being said, it was a weird move by Stroll as well. I can definitely see why Sainz made that move. It looked like Stroll left the door open for him.

As I remember it, he took a wide approach to the corner, as if nobody was there. You usually don't do that if you're defending your position. Either way, Sainz was still too optimistic with that approach.

    • Stroll did go a bit wide first, but he turned it quite early and at a pretty sharp angle, so he did definitely signal what he was doing.

Carrying penalties forward to the next race is not the answer.
