Lewis Hamilton has emerged from the first free practice fastest, setting a lap time of 1:24.220. He completed the lap on the ultra soft tyre, and was over half a second quicker than new team mate Valtteri Bottas who finished P2 on the same tyre compound.
Daniel Ricciardo led a Red Bull 3-4, as Max Verstappen slotted in behind his Australian team mate. Ricciardo was almost four tenths faster than the Dutchman, with both drivers setting their fastest lap on the super soft tyre.
The two by two's followed as Ferrari ended the session fifth and sixth, with Kimi Raikkonen marginally ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Seventh was Felipe Massa who comes out of a very quick retirement to re--take a spot on the grid with Williams.
Romain Grosjean was eighth in the Haas, followed by Nico Hulkenberg, and rounding out the top ten was Sergio Perez. The two Toro Rosso's sit eleventh and twelfth following the session, with Spaniard Carlos Sainz ahead of Daniil Kvyat.
Lance Stroll makes his debut in Melbourne this weekend, and finished his first session in thirteenth. Behind Stroll was the McLaren of Fernando, who will have the eyes of the world on him this weekend to see how the struggling Woking based team fare.
Marcus Ericsson was fifteenth, followed by Esteban Ocon, Kevin Magnussen and Pascal Wehrlein. Jolyon Palmer in the Renault was nineteenth while rounding out the field was the second McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne.
