Toro Rosso has confirmed that its 2019 challenger, the STR14, has successfully passed the FIA crash tests. The tests are carried out every winter on the new cars to ensure they can take the impact of a heavy collision.

A total of 21 tests are performed across three different areas; dynamic (moving) tests, static load tests and rollover tests.13 of these are static load tests which examines sturdy pressure applied to essential parts of the chassis, including the front, side and rear structures, the floor, the side of the nose mounts, and the chassis’ sides at leg and seat levels.

Toro Rosso will field a new line-up for the 2019 season, with Daniil Kvyat returning after spending a year as Ferrari's development driver. He will be joined rookie Alexander Albon, who spent the last two seasons in Formula 2.

The Red Bull junior squad has not yet announced when it will launch the car to the public, however traditionally it has left the car under wraps until the last couple of days building-up to pre-season testing before unveiling it in the paddock.

  • Historically, has passing the crash test early been an adequate indicator for a good chassis?

    • Not that I'm aware but failing the crash test often has been an adequate indicator for a horrendous chassis ;-)

So hard to get stats on that.
My assumption is that the chassis is finalised for the first 3 races, then they tweak the upper aero and drive train.

    • Not necessarily, we'd just have to check earlier years which teams passed the tests first and plot that to their in-season result, and maybe account for incidents that arent due to chassis problems. That sounds like too much work for my lazy bum though.

    • It aint about keeping him safe. My sources tell me RB is intending to use him as a battering ram: he'll plow through as many rivals as possible to leave an open corridor for Max and Gasly.
