The son of ex-Ferrari F1 driver Jean Alesi, Giuliano Alesi will move into Formula 2 next year, continuing his association with the Trident team. The Ferrari Academy driver has been racing for three years in GP3 with Trident, and in that time he has managed to score three wins.
Alesi tested for the team at the post-season F2 test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, and confirmed on Twitter on Friday he would be moving up to the category for 2019.
This news means that Alesi is the eighth driver to be confirmed for the second season since GP2 was rebranded as Formula 2, with the season opener taking place in Bahrain.
"It's an amazing opportunity," Alesi said. "First of all I want to thank Trident as it's going to be a pleasure to continue racing with them in F2. This is a new category, a new adventure, which I'm really looking forward to."
"This year hasn't quite gone as we all hoped, but I'm really looking forward to a successful season with Trident in 2019. We are going to work hard this winter, and try and come back as strong as possible for the season opener."
