Honda revert to 'spec 3' engine at Interlagos

Honda has confirmed that Toro Rosso will run with the Japanese manufacturer's 'spec 3' engine this weekend in Brazil. The decision to use the newer engine comes in a bid to retake eighth in the standings, which is now occupied by Sauber.

Honda first introduced the engine in Russia, before it ran full-time in Japan. The engine proved to be impressive, with both Toro Rossos qualifying in sixth and seventh.  Minor modifications were made in the US before Mexico saw Toro Rosso switch back to an older specification.

As the engine has already been used, Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley will not receive penalties for running it this weekend. Toro Roso is also hoping that it will use the engine in two weeks' time at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

"It’s good. There are a lot of positives ahead of the weekend,” said Gasly. “We will not take any penalty which is going to be really good because the last few races have been tough starting from the back of the grid. That put us in a difficult situation to score points. Now we come to two crucial races for us with the team fighting for eighth place fighting with Sauber."

Toro Rosso sits 3 points behind Sauber in the constructor's standings, with the latter making spectacular improvements over the course of the season. Should Toro Rosso stay in ninth, it will mark its lowest finishing position since the 2012 season.
