Lance Stroll is hoping that Mick Schumacher can successfully see out the European Formula 3 championship, where he currently leads the standings ahead of Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum.
Stroll won the same championship two years ago, before making the move to Formula 1 with Williams. Schumacher has had a strong run during the second half of the season, winning five out of the last six races.
And Stroll is hoping that the 19-year-old can go all the way: “He’s done a really good job, especially in the second half of the season. Looks like he’s put it all together. The championship’s not over yet, I hope he can seal the deal. He’s got a pretty good gap. I hope for himself and the team they can finish it.”
Schumacher has been linked with a move to Formula 1 as soon as 2019, however a deal is unlikely to come together. A Formula 2 contract is much more likely for the German, and Stroll was asked whether he thinks an F2 deal before F1 would benefit Schumacher.
“It’s very driver-dependent. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong. Some drivers get a chance to get into Formula 1 and you have to go for it. Other drivers are in different situations. It’s very dependent from driver to driver, everyone has their own unique situation.”
Speaking abut the move from F3 to F1, Stroll said: “The power you get used to quickly, it’s really how to optimise the car. The tyres also. It’s definitely a big jump from Formula 3, you’re looking at like 15 seconds – probably more – 20 seconds of lap time depending on the track. It’s definitely a big jump.”
