Abiteboul: Ricciardo didn't buy Red Bull's Honda praise

Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul has said his future driver, Daniel Ricciardo, didn't buy into the praise that Red Bull has heaped onto its future engine partner Honda. Ricciardo is staying with his current engine manufacturer Renault who have brought him all seven of his F1 wins whilst the Australian's current team are switching to Honda power for 2019.

Red Bull's Motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has said recently that "nobody can keep up," with Honda's resources, despite the Japanese outfit consistently providing the least powerful power unit since it arrived back on the scene in 2015 with McLaren.

"What I appreciate is the fact that Daniel has his position, he has his agenda, he has his situation, which I don't want to comment on," said Abiteboul "But I don't think he was impressed by Red Bull's communications strategy, vis a vis Renault, vis a vis Honda, and how perfect Honda is.

"I think it's a bit unfair to Renault. I think Honda is progressing, but all the communication of Toro Rosso regarding Honda, when Honda has already introduced 11 or 12 power units. Frankly it's a joke, and unimpressive. That they can influence a guy like Pierre Gasly I can understand, and not a driver like Daniel Ricciardo, and that I respect."

Cyril has been classy compared to what Red Bull have been doing for over 2 years now. Not sure why all the hatred on Renault.

Oh dear oh dear, can't wait to see him and others eat their words about the performance of Honda engines. They(Honda) know they are far from perfect however does he forget the troubles with the Renault power unit. Isn't hulkenberg starting at the back of the grid in Belgium!

    • Isn't Vandoorne at the back of the grid in a Honda?

    • Vandoorne is in McLaren, and they run with Renault power.

  • Riccardo was impressed by failures from Renault. He thought, why not join the team that makes all this possible. He needed a "change of scenery", by following the source of his problems.

  • Whatever you say, mr Abiteboullshit. I get the salt regarding Red Bull, but I find it trashy that you just had to put that extra shade on Honda when you clearly have work to do, mr. Second rate Mysterio. Perhaps you should wait with talking until after you've given your customers the same MGU-K upgrade your works team is enjoying?

    • Cyril? Classy? Only if classy means him being a big fat liar, then yes he is classy. Dont be fooled, this guy is just as bad as the likes of Marko, another second rate Mysterio. Look, I dont exactly hate Renault, in fact I wanted them to do well, but there are just so many things they do that I just dont like. Like how they dont give out their MGU-K to their, you know, paying customers. I get it'll give Renault a better advantage, but it isnt exactly what I'd call classy. And postponing an upgrade to the customers is bad, refusing or making an upgrade the others cant take is far worse, and a new low in the whole works vs customer unfairness. Or when they just simply didnt have enough spare parts for STR, another of their paying customers (admitting to either incompetence or unfairness)? Renault is probably the least pleasant team towards their customers.

@CALLE - I'm not sure I agree. Renault you must remember have been stung by two vitriolic years of piss poor comments from RedBull, now that was a total lack of class. I can fully understand CAs position and he rightly sees RICs decision imo as vindication that he and his team are on the right path, have gone through hell and appear to be emerging stronger. What do we want, bullshit anecdotes and vanilla 'a-la footballer comments' when we speak to these people, or do we want to see edge, ego and shading - I know where my money is.
