The Haas F1 team has confirmed that it is interested in re-opening discussions with Pietro Fittipaldi over a test role. The American team had lined Fittipaldi up to drive at the post-Spanish Grand Prix test, before he was involved in a horrific crash.
While racing at the Spa-Francorchamps round of the World Endurance Championship, the 22-year-old collided with the barriers at Eau Rouge, suffering fractures to both of his legs. The injury damaged his plans to race in the WEC, IndyCar and Super Formula in 2018.
However, he has now returned to the cockpit of a racing car, as he took part in the Honda Indy 200 at the end of July. And Haas team principal Guenther Steiner revealed that he met up with Fittipaldi recently, telling him that they will speak again when he is ready.
"I met up with him before heading to Germany to see how he’s doing. He’s doing pretty well," Steiner said. "I just said get back racing and then we speak again when you feel you are ready again. He needs to get comfortable again. He was testing and I didn't speak with him after he was testing I just read what was said in the media that he felt comfortable.
"I'll go and see him again when I am back in North Carolina and we see what we can do for him at the end of the year. We didn’t have a contract with him, we were speaking about the possibility of him doing something, and then we stopped when he had his legs broken. Now we need to pick it up again when he’s up to it."
