Gasly not thinking about vacant Red Bull seat

Pierre Gasly says he is not thinking about the possibility of joining Red Bull next season. Last week, Daniel Ricciardo revealed that he would be leaving the energy drink team at the end of the season.

Gasly has been heavily linked with the seat despite 2018 being only his first full season in F1. The Frenchman has impressed so far in his career, scoring a fourth-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this year.

But with the potential to join Red Bull next season looming, Gasly is not thinking about that, and is instead focusing on his current role at Toro Rosso: "My intention in the medium term is to make the leap to Red Bull because my goal is to fight for the championship," he told Marca.

"But at this moment it is a great opportunity to be in Toro Rosso with Honda.  I am very happy to be where I am, the only thing I think is to keep improving and the opportunities will come some day.

"It's just my first season in F1 and I'm 22 years old. Of course, I want to fight for the championship as soon as possible, but I am delighted to continue at Toro Rosso if they need me, to continue building experience and growing as a driver.

"I would like [a Red Bull seat] but I'm not thinking about it too much. I am happy with my season so far at Toro Rosso, I'm happy to be here. At the moment, nothing is decided, I think. It's a similar situation to Carlos. We're both waiting to see what happens."

  • Well Why loose Sainz after September? When there is chance to hold both Galsy and Sainz by signing Sainz into RB. Its not like RB is going to win a championship in 2019 with Honda.

    • You're thinking rationally instead of emotionally. You need to get into the mindset of Helmut Marko and Chris. Horner (to a lesser extent) to understand why Gasly is even being considered. There should be very little debate about this and yet there is a lot.

  • They are so influenced by their media agents. Same like Leclerc all what he says is wrapped in paper before come out.
