Daniel Ricciardo: "Pirelli should produce a special qualify tyre"

Daniel Ricciardo says it would be better if teams could select even softer tyres at each Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing driver said the recent Spanish Grand Prix was a perfect example of when an even softer compound would have spiced up the action.

"I don't understand why we can't have the hypersofts at every race. Or at least in qualifying," he told Globo. In Barcelona, Pirelli supplied the medium, soft and supersoft tyres to drivers.

But Ricciardo says that, at a circuit like that, the hypersoft would be effectively "a qualifying tyre that is very different from the race tyre. It was already obvious on Friday that the top six would use the soft in qualifying and then try to stop once with the medium. It was no secret," he said.

"I think if we did that it would create more options and surprises, because right now it's a little predictable," Ricciardo added.

I disagree. We have enough compiunds already, lets keep the costs down where costs can be cut without harming anything.

    • Same here... I'd even say we already have too many compounds. I frankly hate that so much of the show is about tyre selection, compounds, etc.

    • Although I do think that tyres in qualifying should be good enough to do more than one lap. I remember in the previous qualifying format when drivers would do set of 2 or 3 laps.

    • They should, but then why not just send in the Super softs? They are fast and last more than a lap. Wont be as blistering fast as the hypers or ultras, but they last. Maybe a tad too well. But we have enough compounds as is, and in a time when we are talking about the need of cutting down on costs and simplifying things, the current favourite buzz words in F1, its beyond me why Pirelli can go haywire with producing compound after compound thats never actually used.
