Alain Prost: "Renault right to take risk with Sainz"

Carlos Sainz has been a positive addition to the Renault team. That is the view of team advisor and F1 legend Alain Prost, amid speculation the French team might try to retain Sainz for 2019.

Renault signed the Spaniard for this year only, despite the fact that Red Bull could pull him back into their family to replace Daniel Ricciardo.

Prost told Italy's Autosprint: "We knew taking Sainz would be a risk. But it is important to take this kind of risk to advance the team. It was a positive decision for the team and for Nico (Hulkenberg), because you can see how it has raised his (Hulkenberg's) level even further." (GMM)

Sainz was hardly a risk. He's a proven talent. What is Alain talking about here?

The risk is not Sainz, the risk is dealing with Red Bull. RB is in the win win situation here. RB can use Sainz as the best bargaining chip there is. You don't want to give us engines for 2019? Please can we have him back. Oh, you want us to make a decision before so and so race? No, we'll wait. There is no rush. It's a good place to be in I suppose but it carries risk for Renault.

Isnt it ironic, how Renault say they want to emulate Merc' and Ferrari's methods, and find seats for their own drivers at customer teams, while they borrow a driver from one of their customers? They are like that one cuckoo that decides that "y'know what? Im going to snatch this pidgeon egg, and raise that chick as my own", meanwhile tossing its own egg into the lake instead of the burrow it was supposed to go into.

I suppose perhaps some people are just not ready, or are not viewed as being ready. Toro Rosso or should I say RB had that problem. They had to draft in Hartley out of all people. Not sure if he's the right fit for the seat but they had to get someone. If RB was struggling I doubt Renault had got a pool of drivers to choose from.

They did, but there are worse around than Hartley they coulda picked from. I think Vergne woulda been a better pick, but they did a good job at tossing him into the dumpster.

Ah, I got confused there. I thought Hartley had been in F1 before but it was of course Vergne. Never mind. Hartley has got good credentials, but they don't seem to have materialised just yet in F1. Gasly seems to be doing a very good job so far, bar the crash. XD

Yeah, that crash was awkward, to say the least. Really dont hope that will happen again. XD
