Gasly: "We're fighting with Williams and Force India"

Toro Rosso-Honda has the "potential" to improve in 2018. That is the view of the team's rookie driver Pierre Gasly, after a disappointing first outing for the newly Honda-powered team this season. "We're fighting with Williams and Force India," the Frenchman, who retired from the race with an engine failure, said.

It has emerged that, of the ten F1 teams, only Toro Rosso-Honda was slower on average this year in Australia compared with 2017. "I think the others have made pretty good progress," Gasly said. "We looked a little better in the test than we did in Australia, but the potential is there."

He said Toro Rosso and Honda are planning an "aggressive development programme" for the season, and should be stronger in different conditions. (GMM)

  • Honda is doing "aggressive development programme" since more than three years now. I feel a big relief after Australian Grand Pirx. I really thought for awhile, after the testing, that McLaren is the blame of last three years of disgrace.

  • Honda's Engine didn't make the dramatic improvement over the winter. I think, RB will stick to Renault.

  • Where is Franz Tost bragging about their engine? Suddenly no more self-congratulating. I thought they were sure they'd be ahead of Mclaren... instead they are fighting not to be in last place. I didn't see them fighting Williams or Force India last Sumday.

    • I dont think they or anyone really thought they'd be in front of McLaren. We pretty much always figured STR would be somewhere down the bottom bit of the midfield. However, the question remain about the quality of the Honda unit. We didnt really see much from it during Melbourne... In fact we saw very little of the rest of the field.
