Timo Glock: "Indycar screen may be F1 option"

Timo Glock says it's good news that alternatives to the 'Halo' cockpit protection system are still being pursued. For 2018, F1 is mandatorily introducing the controversial Halo, which former F1 driver Glock admits is very ugly.

"It really affects the aesthetics of the car and that's a pity," the German told RTL. "For safety it's the right way but visually it's a horror to see a safety bar like that on a formula one car."

However, Indycar is pushing in a different direction for its future, recently testing a clear windscreen-like system that some say looks better than Halo. "I think the danger is a part of the sport, which is why I would be happy if they found another solution," former Toyota driver Glock said. "The screen might be an option. One thing is certain: it will be very, very difficult to get used to the Halo." (GMM)

Pits stops for a screen wash then?
Could be a new job opportunity for the now out-of-work grid glamour girls!

  • Great idea, just not sure how the screen will cope with grime through-out the race. Maybe a rip off like endurance racing?

    • They established that rip offs wouldnt help, grime build up was too fast. AFAIK, the screen used by Indy car will have reduced ability to pick up and retain dust and such.

I really don’t like that windscreen, no seriously, it looks like something you’d find on a motorcycle sidecar. Apart from that, it must seriously affect airflow and create a massive air dam right in the way of engine air intake. Vettel commented on a similar screen that it distorted vision at certain angles. You might not like the halo but by comparison, it looks meaner and more effective, plus it would not appear to interfere with the airflow much. The only plus of the windscreen that I can see is it’s weight advantage.

If they require similar impact resistance levels for screen there won't be major weight advntage for screen. But of course it helps a bit with weight that there is already titanium monocoque protecting driver from side impacts which may require less support structures than Halo rear mounting.
