Formula 1 making plans for Las Vegas race

An official has denied that planning for a F1 race in Las Vegas is obviously racing ahead. With Liberty Media often mentioning the desire for a second annual grand prix in the US, the local Las Vegas Review Journal says the sport has now made a series of trademark applications for Las Vegas GP-related items. "As far as we know, there is nothing new with formula one," the president of Las Vegas events said.

However, a F1 spokesman confirmed that Las Vegas is on Liberty's radar. "We have made no secret that we are looking for destination cities, and regarding the US, Las Vegas has been mentioned alongside Miami and New York," said Luca Colajanni. Indeed, the Las Vegas Review Journal said F1 has also made similar trademark applications for New York and Miami. (GMM)

The F1 Las Vegas ‘car park’ Grand Prix 1981-1984 had to have been the very worst races that happened in F1. If that had been done today, the internet would be on fire. If you’re going to do it again please please make a better circuit...

NO more street races. Leave that to Formula E.

    • Street circuits don't have to be bad. Just like any other, it's about design. If executed correctly Las Vegas would be about as good as it gets. It would be like Monaco in the Americas.

  • A second race in the U.S is a bit of a dumb move compared to hosting it where there is a market for it, such as Argentina.

    • Fair point, but Argentina is in no condition to host this kind of event. The facilities need a lot of improvement, their economy is still in shambles so it would be difficult for people to afford. Las Vegas is about making a market. I think it's a no-brainer. It's a perfect setting for Formula 1.

    • Maybe, but I still think its better to expand before we have two races in the same country, no matter how big it is. And seeing as we are not likely to see a new entry in another few years, its plenty of time to prepare. Im not as against a Vegas race as some, but expand before you make doublettes.
