Hamilton has no desire to match Schumacher's championship record

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he doesn't possess the target of matching Michael Schumacher's record of seven Formula 1 world titles. Hamilton wrapped up his fourth championship in 2017, his third with the Mercedes team.

The Briton's maiden championship came back in 2008, in only his second year in F1. 10 years later, Hamilton joins Alain Prost and 2017 rival Sebastian Vettel with four titles. While he admits the Juan Manuel Fangio's tally of five championships is up for matching, he doesn't see himself getting near the number left by Schumacher.

"I can't see it [matching Schumacher] at the moment. Four more. It has taken me 10 years to achieve this four. I don't have that desire to match it. Matching Fangio could be quite cool. Being that I am going to be here for at least another couple of years, that is my goal to try and at least get that.

"When I am older and look back, I don't think the amount of titles I have is going to define what I am as a driver or who I am," he continued. "How I work with the team, how I drive the car, every time I drive the car and extract it from the car - that's what I feel inside defines me.

"When I was young I thought I would have a family at 28. When I got to 28 it all shifted. But it is difficult to say never," he added. "Maybe in a couple of years ' time I will be saying: 'I am going to go another 10 years.' I really hope that's not the case because I'll be with you guys until you are in Zimmer frames."

  • Any guy driving in F1 dream about being the absolute best, and as of now, that title probably still belong to Schumi. Thats not a bad goal mind, especially if you want to emulate what he brought as a whole to F1. I think its more down to being able to or not. AFAIP, we have at least 3 years left with Mercedes dominance, 3 years in which Hamilton can catch up. Assuming Ferrari and or Red Bull find a way to beat Mercedes, that is.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if Hamilton beats him. If he's got the best car, or a car that's fighting for the championship, he will be the favourite to win
