Hartley pushing for points despite low grid position

Published on 12 Nov 2017 13:20

Brendon Hartley is still aiming for his first points finish in Formula 1 in Brazil, despite starting the race towards the rear of the field. The Kiwi will start the Grand Prix in eighteenth place, ahead of teammate Pierre Gasly. Both Toro Rosso drivers took on heft penalty due to a change in engine components.

Hartley out-qualified Gasly on Saturday, and managed to get into Q2. He then didn't set a lap in that session as the team felt it would be wise to save tyres for the race on Sunday. Despite his position at the bottom of the grid, Hartley still has points on his mind.

"Not a bad day, I’m pretty happy to have got through to Q2," he said. "We then didn’t go out to set a time in Q2 in order to save all the tyres and keep all the options available for tomorrow’s race, so we just used the session to do a couple of practice starts – something I needed considering my first two starts in F1, which haven’t been the best.

"Hopefully this pays dividends tomorrow! It’s going to be quite a tough ask to finish in the points, but we’re definitely going to try, do our best and push for that – I’m really looking forward to the race."
