After setting the fastest time in the first practice session, Lewis Hamilton ended FP2 once again as the quickest man. The Briton's fastest lap time was a 1:09.515. However, teammate Valtteri Bottas was less than half a tenth of a second behind.

Daniel Ricciardo followed both Mercedes' in a weekend where he is expected to take a ten-place grid penalty. The Australian was two-tenths down on the Silver Arrows. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel ended the session fourth place.

Max Verstappen was fifth, with only a tiny margin separating him and Vettel ahead. Vettel's teammate Kimi Raikkonen trailed Verstappen in sixth place. Frenchman Esteban Ocon, who matched his best career result last time out in Mexico, was P7.

Felipe Massa's final home Grand Prix weekend got off to a decent start, with the 36-year-old placing his Williams inside the top ten with a lap time marginally slower than Ocon's. Nico Hulkenberg was P9, while Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten.

Alonso's compatriot Carlos Sainz was eleventh, ahead of Sergio Perez and Stoffel Vandoorne. Lance Stroll was fourteenth and seemingly had an unhappy session as he was heard complaining multiple times over the radio.

Romain Grosjean ended Friday running in fifteenth but had a hefty spin midway through the session. After a troubled first practice session, Toro Rosso managed to get more running in during the afternoon, with Pierre Gasly heading Brendon Hartley

Pascal Wehrlein, who is fighting for his future in Formula 1, was eighteenth, ahead of teammate Marcus Ericsson. The Swede also had a violent spin at Turn 11 and hit the barriers, but was able to limp his Sauber back to the pits.

Antonio Giovinazzi ended the session last in the Haas. The Italian drove the session instead of FP1, as it was expected rain would arrive during the second practice outing. While it held off for the most part, it began to fall lightly in the final 20 minutes of green flag running.
