With Honda introducing a new upgrade this weekend in Austria, Fernando Alonso is not staying as optimistic. Honda has struggled this season in terms of power and reliability, and are on the verge of a divorce with customer McLaren.
Honda chief Yusuke Hasegawa is very hopeful for the upgrade, stating: "I am looking forward to seeing our performance. However, lead driver Fernando Alonso, who only picked up his first points of the season last time out in Azerbaijan, is not holding out much hope.
"I think the engine is good for the team to do a press release, but it is practically the same," he said. "Any upgrade is welcome, but there is no change with the new engine. We already tried it in Baku practice, but we were last and second to last," Alonso added. So asked what is expecting from the 'spec 3' Honda in Austria, he answered bluntly: "Nothing."
Alonso's own future is in doubt and has been linked to Ferrari and Mercedes for 2018. But Mercedes' Niki Lauda has denied that he will make the move to the Silver Arrows: "Alonso cannot come to us. Lewis (Hamilton) has a contract. Valtteri (Bottas) brings a great performance too, both harmonise well. There is simply no space with us."
