The arrival of the F1 circus in Baku has been greeted with resurfacing rumours that a team may be gaining performance by adding oil to its fuel. The suspicion had receded prior to this weekend, but it has now caused the FIA to reiterate that it is illegal for any team to make such an addition at any time.
When examining why the issue has arisen again, the German publication Auto Motor und Sport wrote: "Why? Because Mercedes obviously asked the FIA for clarification. After checks in Canada, apparently one team returned doubtful results. The FIA did not want to confirm this, but Mercedes suspects the Ferrari has an additional oil tank."
In response to these claims, Ferrari engineering guru Jock Clear stated his belief that the team's competitiveness is simply down to a good overall package. "I think we can say that the standout characteristic is that there is no standout characteristic. It just seems to be a very well-behaved car in all areas."
