Fernando Alonso has described the ongoing struggles at McLaren as "tiring" as the Spaniard prepares for the Candian Grand Prix weekend. Alonso joined McLaren back in 2015 in the hope of fighting for a world championship, but it hasn't gone to plan as power unit suppliers Honda continue to face problems.
2015 saw a dire struggle for the Woking outfit, while 2016 indicated some promising signs of improvement. 2017 was set to be the year they would be challenging for podiums, but instead, they have just taken a big step backwards. Alonso admits while he is happy with the team, he just wants them to be competitive.
"I'm happy, the only thing missing is to be competitive," Alonso told EFE news agency. "With Honda and the engine we have we cannot get all the potential possible, and this is sometimes frustrating," he said. "Because you try to give everything you have in a weekend and then something breaks, it's a little tiring."
Since 2015, McLaren-Honda has bagged only 103 points. When put in contrast to Mercedes' 1647 since 2015, it is clearly visible how much McLaren has struggled. Zak Brown admits he doesn't see how the team will fight for a championship in 2018.
"We have to solve our problems. 2018 is not far away so we're going to have to evaluate how we get back to the top positions. I don't know yet how we are going to do it, and it's certainly very difficult to imagine that we are going to fight for the world championship next year.
