Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul thinks that the new 2017 cars are allowing drivers to show their true skill and speed. The cars generate much more downforce this season and are much faster through corners, making them more difficult to drive.
The technology in Formula 1 has also become heavily advanced in the last number of years, with drivers having to control and manage many things from inside the cockpit, something Abiteboul thinks also thinks shows a driver's skill
The comment comes only right after the 39-year-old said that current Renault driver Jolyon Palmer needs to pick up his performance in order to retain his 2018 seat. There has been a substantial difference in performances from Palmer and teammate Nico Hulkenberg this season so far, with Hulkenberg scoring 14 points to Palmer's 0.
"The contrast between the drivers is striking," he told the French-language news agency AFP. "It highlights the important role played by the driver in a sport where technology is central. It is not just about the engine and the car -- much is determined by the driver. So first of all there is this competition between drivers and Nico reminds us of that."
Abiteboul also spoke out in praise of Nico Hulkenberg who joined the team at the start of the year. Abiteboul says that the German has an "unusual role" in the team and is massively helping the manufacturer progress.
"Nico has an unusual role in the team," said the Frenchman. "He gives us the direction for development, and the priorities for changes to the car. We know what to do, but he helps us to highlight the key points and show what is more and less important."
