Sergio Perez will start tomorrow's Monaco Grand Prix from seventh on the grid after another dazzling performance. The Mexican is on a hefty consecutive run of points finishes and looks set for another tomorrow around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.
2017 marks the third time Perez has qualified in P7 at Monaco, matching the feat he achieved in 2013 and 2015. He says that he is delighted with his result, believing that it is the maximum that he could have achieved.
“I’m very happy with our result today. I think we got the maximum we could from the session. Every lap in qualifying is crucial here and you need to be on the pace from your first lap to get a good result. We made the right calls to avoid the traffic and we found the rhythm straight away, which is why I only had to complete one run in Q1."
Perez knows that he can't hail his qualifying result for too long, as the race is still to come. He says one can't afford to lose concentration around the Principality and can't make a prediction on where he will finish. Last year, he finished on the podium.
"I am very proud of what we achieved as a team but it’s a shame Esteban [Ocon] couldn’t be in Q3 with me. Everything can happen in Monaco so I am not going to make any predictions for tomorrow. The race will be long and you cannot have any lapse in concentration – any mistake here means you can get a puncture or crash out of the race, so we need to focus on the job and try to bring home another good result.”
