Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that Sebastian Vettel can remain with the Scuderia for as long as he wishes, despite the fact that the German is yet to finalise any 2018 plans.
Vettel has led a rejuvenated Ferrari in a close battle with Mercedes so far this year, and he is currently sitting at the top of the standings as the teams and drivers prepare for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix. Marchionne sees this form as proof that Ferrari has successfully achieved its aim of producing a car that can challenge the Silver Arrows for the title, and says that it is entirely up to Vettel whether he stays or goes when his current deal expires at the season's end.
"If he is happy in the car, and he likes the car, he can stay as long he likes," he told the Italian press. "The talks we had last year were very nervous because the car was not there. So we try to get him the car as he wants and then the choice is his. We dreamed of being at the head of the championship and we're there."
