Felipe Massa has stated that former teammate Valtteri Botta must keep Lewis Hamilton under pressure at Mercedes or otherwise be forced into a number two role for the season ahead.
Bottas joined Mercedes at the start of the year, replacing Nico Rosberg who retired after winning the world championship. Since, Bottas has taken his first pole position and win in Formula 1, but Massa insists that the Finn needs to be consistently quick.
"To be in a position to compete with Hamilton for the title, he must finish ahead of him in the next two or three races," the Brazilian veteran told the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
"If Lewis gets 20 or 25 points ahead of him, then he (Bottas) will have to work for him for the rest of the year. It's that way because Raikkonen will also work for Vettel this year," Massa added
