Williams has confirmed that Gary Paffet will be driving the FW40 around the Bahrain International circuit for the first in-season test this week. The test runs on Tuesday and Wednesday, with full-time drivers Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll driving on day one.
Paffet, 36, joined Williams last year as its simulator driver and will take the car out on track on Wednesday to test new parts and learn more data for the team.
The last time Paffet drove an F1 car was in 2013, at the in-season test at Silverstone. Teams must allocate half of the in-season test days to a young driver and, despite his experience, Paffett officially qualifies for the position, having never started a Grand Prix.
The Briton currently competes in DTM, driving for the Mercedes HWA Team. He won the championship 12 years ago.
