Wolff congratulates Bottas on maiden pole position

Toto Wolff has praised Valtteri Bottas after the Finn took his first ever pole position in Bahrain. The Finn was two-hundredths of a second faster than team mate Lewis Hamilton.

Bottas was behind his team mate on the time sheets as they began their final runs, but pulled enough out of the bag to edge ahead of the triple world champion, and the Brit made a mistake on his final run which prevented him from taking the top spot.

"The first ever pole position for any driver is a huge moment.," Wolff said. "He has kept his calm. He has the best team and it's a perfect situation for the team now with the respect the two drivers have for each other.

"I think generally he is not easily shaken. He had a bad day in Shanghai but he recovered really quickly. He continues to improve all the time and that's an important skill. Lewis has that skill as well.

"He was very down after the spin. He apologised many times but he has paid it back today. It didn't look like either of them could improve their times [on the second run] but suddenly Valtteri did it.

"It's a big margin but the Ferrari drivers had understeer which may suggest they're protecting the rears for tomorrow. There wasn't five tenths between us yesterday evening so we have a very clever bunch of guys who are going to put their heads together to come up with the best strategy."
