Valterri Bottas was denied his second ever front row start as Sebastian Vettel got ahead of the Finn by the smallest of margins. The gap between the two was 1/1000th of a second in the final stage of qualifying.
Despite missing out on the spot alongside his team mate Lewis Hamilton, Bottas remains optimistic for the race, claiming that third position is a good place to start the race from.
"It is a real shame Seb managed to get between us but the race is tomorrow. We are starting first and third and that's a good place to start, The weather can be anything tomorrow. Lewis was strong, Ferrari was strong and we're expecting a tight race. Let's see what tomorrow brings."
5.9 centimetres between Bottas and Vettel
1/1000th of a second is, of course, the tiniest of margins but when put into length, Toto Wolff confirmed that the gap between the Finn and the German was 5.9 centimeters on track - which is absolutely tiny if you consider how rapid the cars are travelling across the line.
"The difference between Seb and Valtteri was 5.9cm! Ferrari and Mercedes are quite a step ahead of the others. It's completely different to last year and two cars are so close to each other.
"For an engineer, it's the perfect storm. We're missing relevant data points and it's about putting the car in the right balance. It's made worse that it's totally different climatic conditions tomorrow. We're in the dark."
