Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn says that there is zero chance the team could switch to up-to-date 2017 Ferrari power mid-way through the season.
Sauber currently run the 2016 Ferrari engine, a deal which was signed amid a struggle to survive in Formula 1 beyond 2016 when their future looked in doubt.
However with backing from Longbow Finance, the team has been able to say they will remain on the grid, and some have suggested that the money could allow them to switch to the new Ferrari engine.
Kaltenborn denies this: "No, we're not planning that," she said in Shanghai. "But it's also too early to say how much we are losing, because Australia is not the most representative track. We will have to wait a few races and then we will see how far the gap is."
Sauber has been in the mid to low pack since the introduction of the V6 Hybrid engine and look to be near the back of the field again this year. Kaltenborn also mentioned that a "major chassis update" is coming for the Spanish Grand Prix.
