Hamilton will never do a "shoey"

Lewis Hamilton has said that nothing will ever persuade him to do a “shoey” and take a drink from his own race boot on the podium.

The shoey is a celebration that first reared its head in F1 thanks to Daniel Ricciardo last year. He first demonstrated it after finishing second to Hamilton at Hockenheim, copying something previously done by countryman and MotoGP rider Jack Miller when he took his first win.

Over the remainder of the season, Ricciardo also managed to get Mark Webber, Max Verstappen and Nico Rosberg to take a drink from a sweaty boot – and whilst they may have taken some persuading, the shoey did catch on enough for Rosberg to do it after claiming his world title in November.

It is definitely not as popular with Hamilton, however, who has made clear that it is “disgusting”. Speaking during a Facebook Q&A with UBS, the Briton said that he will never perform the celebration himself.

“There is no racing achievement (that will get me to do a shoey). That is disgusting. It is kinda cool that he (Ricciardo) has got his own little thing and I admire him for having his own little thing. It is totally cool if he wants to drink the sweat off his own foot, but I definitely don’t (want to)”, he explained.

“I wouldn’t even drink the sweat from my own shoe. You don’t understand…we have got these shoes and it is so hot down by our feet – all the hydraulic fluids are going down there and they are running at 300 degrees or something crazy. It is bleeding hot. Your feet are drenched afterwards.

“My dad would always call it ‘toe jam’. He is just drinking ‘toe jam’. There is no way, no way (I will do it). Zero chance.”

    • Hehe, I'd honestly probably never do it myself, but then again it could be worse: could've been someone else's shoe. ;) But it is a pretty fun thing, and fun is probably the word that seems to define Ricciardo, so it fits him.
