Renault have given Kevin Magnussen hope of retaining his seat for 2017 by asking to extend to option on his contract to the middle of the month.
The team always had an option to retain the services of the Dane but it was widely believed that the option was either set to expire soon, or already had.
Now reports in Denmark point to that option being extended to October 14, with Magnussen himself confirming the news.
"Renault asked for their option on me to be extended, and I accepted," he told BT newspaper.
"I want to show my patience and loyalty to the team," Magnussen added. "They showed me great confidence in giving me the chance to return to formula one this season, and I hope that our cooperation will continue."
Magnussen's advisor Jesper Carlsen told Ekstra Bladet newspaper that, now that Renault target Sergio Perez has decided to remain with Force India, talks are on.
"We have a good dialogue with the team," he said. "Kevin is very interested in continuing to be a part of their ambitious project, and it looks positive with regards to an agreement on an extension."
