Portugal are eyeing a return to the Formula One Calendar.
The country held 13 Grands Prix at Estoril from 1984-1996, but hasn't held a race since.
"It's time to think about formula one again," Portimao politician Isilda Gomes reportedly said.
Prime minister Antonio Costa was also quoted by the Spanish sports daily Marca as saying F1 back in Portugal would be "very exciting."
The last Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the country was won by Jacques Villeneuve, who beat pole sitter and team mate Damon Hill by just under 20 seconds on his way to his only world championship crown. Michael Schumacher finished third.
The country has hosted test sessions as recently as 2009 at the Algarve International Circuit which opened in 2008.
