Despite the great progress this season that Renault has achieved with their engine, the French manufactuer are still lagging behind Mercedes.

Since introduction the V6 turbo engines in 2014, Renault has had trouble being competitive. 2015 went quite disastrous, but form has returned to the French manufacturer. Christian Horner however told ESPN that the gap with Mercedes is still quite big.

"I think Renault has made some good steps. We know that more is in the pipeline and I think we can expect even more. We know that we're about 35 kilowatts (approximately 47 BHP) behind, which is what Renault tells us anyway, but we also know what the plans are to fill that gap. "

Renault said in Hungary that no major updates are planned like in Monaco but according to Horner much more can be extracted from the current package.

"We can squeeze extra performance from both fuel, tuning, and the driveability of the engine. We are confident that they can still take a number of steps through this to get started."
