Renault are set to introduce a major engine upgrade at the first race of the 2017 Formula One season.

The French manufacturer's engine technical director Remi Taffin revealed the news on Friday at the Hungarian Grand Prix, while also revealing that major developments on this year's engine are set to stop.

"It will be next year, the big step we will have will be next year, race one," he said when quizzed about Renault's next major engine upgrade.

"Until we get to the end of the season, we will be working on the specification we have now, trying to extract the most out of it," he revealed. "But there won't be any more big steps like we had for race one and race six."

Taffin wass pleased with the progress Renault has made so far, but insists the manufacturer has a long way to go before they catch class-leaders Mercedes.

"Now we can see the improvement on track and everything we got out of the factory to the track was working well.

"That's a good step forward. That's the same for the first race and Monaco/Montreal when we introduced a new specification," he said. "It's all working well. We're on it but we still have a good way to go."

  • Well, does sound promising. But Mercedes will likely still dominate enginewise next year.
