Nico Hulkenberg is hoping that 2017s Formula One rules refresh will allow drivers to push more.
In recent years the series has come under fire for restricting fuel and using tyres which fall away easily, meaning that drivers spend more time driving conservatively rather than on the limit.
Hulkenberg said that while he hopes the new rules, which will add downforce and wider tyres, will allow drivers to get involved with more battles on track.
"I don't know at the moment how those cars and tyres will behave," he is quoted by Autosport. "It is a bit early for that, as I haven't felt and run those tyres."
"We will only know better once we start testing and have done a few races. I hope that they allow a bit more free pushing and not as much management," he added. "But I am not sure that will be the case."
